With Alessandra

time travels softly

across the river
sun pours

volcanoes of night

suck away the day

ghosts rise hungry
 clean olive scented bones

abandoned in another sleepless night

along this land of green dreams

the river birds of Aswan

now awake
arching stretch
her champagne breasts
as far as the eye can see
waiting for secrets

In 1985 I had the great good fortune to spend a few weeks in Egypt. Cairo by boat down to Aswan almost into the Sudan. It was the most beautiful evocative romantic haunted country I ever visited.
