when Chavez died
people wept
soldiers, civilians
embraced in sorrow on the streets
how envious
will you be Mr Bush
how evil he must
have been to make
the people weep in grief
and when the hearts of Cuba break
will that give you joy as well
when Chavez died
people wept
soldiers, civilians
embraced in sorrow on the streets
how envious
will you be Mr Bush
how evil he must
have been to make
the people weep in grief
and when the hearts of Cuba break
will that give you joy as well

I got to meet Chávez a few weeks before he died. I was working at Centro Legal Campesino in Las Cruces, New Mexico. It was a wonderful time in my life. He had the aura of a saint, bit none of is thought he was so near death. He took my hands in his, looked into my eyes–a highpoint of my life. Thank you for this poem.
