Community College 1974

 first day,

we were classmates.

showed us photos –

himself,

in training

 in uniform

 with his buddies

 with his dead gook

next day,

no one sat near him.

next day,

didn’t show.

never came back.

the photos are not mine. saw them at an exhibit in yale art gallery. the poem – i was hoping to show the vast differences between returning vets and others in same age group. this realty happened when i was in college. the guy in the poem was genuine. he had survived some heavy shit but we were much to naive and un able to understand this. the photos made us uncomfortable so we withdrew and left one of our own behind. at 18 how hard is it for any of us to fit in to a social group – imagine being a returning war vet? anyway i don’t usually say much about a poem but as you know i have strong feelings about the Vietnam War. thanks for taking the time to comment.
