birthday note on turning 60 by pd lyons

1974 crosby

1974

the old fellow near the sea

the old fellow near the sea

today ends my fifth decade. to morrow i will be 60.

the sixth decade begins at 5:54 am

bringer of the new dawn

 ever aging scorpion.

sometimes i think it has not happened

sometimes when i think of that certain little boy

i still get tears.

sometimes when i think back,

teenage, marriages, children, lovers, others –

reminding myself  of the good and of the not so very good –

reminding myself that I really  did the best I could.

but you know i am the luckiest man i know.

i have ended up in a country foreign to my birth

with a family of my own…

i  think i am in the best health ever.

no smoking for over 15 years

steady yoga meditation

and always did and still do love to walk –

there are miles of my life upon

mountains, shores, countries, continents

and  along those meandering pathways between the worlds.

and while i know all things come to an end –

as of right now i have not!

how cool is that?

cheers

Sometimes In This Writing Life #4

sometimes in this writting life

sometimes in this writing life

you wouldn’t have to wait for anything to boot up
turn on or upload you could just sit down and bang away royal keys upon a cotton rag sheet of water marked paper

you wouldn’t have to settle for crap wine, château Bordeauxs
would be easily accessible even to a low level pot dealer

you could get a soft pack of Marlboro that tasted good better than the hard pack in the days before anyone even thought of lights

and the rent was 180 for five big rooms and a laundry room n full bath including heat n electricity

and you could sit on the second floor back porch blow a joint in broad daylight watch some old ginger tom prowl around some inner city orange rose bush

while the most beautiful girl you thought you’d ever know sat on your lap and your hands found ways to make her melt underneath her long gypsy soul skirt.

up the lane

Walk (to work) form our house to Fore village. such a day of perfect light, decide to take the camera and photo on the way. about an hours slow walk on the roads down to the village.

did what it says

did what it says

Stopping along the way to take in the day. never know just what there is to see out here in the country.

Chat with some other creatures of the road, or field.

grass is always greener - even if its a driveway

grass is always greener - even if it's a driveway

Perfect light, no wind wonderful ancient grey stones of the abbey against a still vivid grass, luscious blue sky crossed with slight clouds, jet streams and very active crows and jack daws. just about 1pm as i sit and write this. left the house about ten-ish . a bit of a rest then walk back.maybe cross country up over the hills and headlands through the woods down to lough lene and the up the lake road making a huge circle home. better that then just doubling back. see more that way. thank god i’m free from film!

where i work

where i work

so i’m peck-ish and thirsty – ready to go up over the mountain to see what i can see…

and all that i could see was the other side of the mountain

on the other side

on the other side

the hill

the hill
